Baby and Toddler Room
Our bright baby and toddler room provides both a stimulating and comfortable environment for children aged from 3 months to 2 years. Whilst bright and stimulating, the versatility of the room offers a calm and relaxing atmosphere.
A high ratio of specialised staff (1:3) ensure that babies and toddlers can benefit from individual attention through a structured but flexible routine that is adapted to suit individual needs ensuring continuity between home and nursery. A daily diary is provided to record information throughout the day for your reference.
Our baby unit also has a specialist sensory room where babies can explore and develop their sensory skills. At Nutkins we recognise that from birth babies are marvellous learners immediately investigating the sounds and sights of their surroundings. Our sensory room is designed to stimulate children through exploration of touch, sound and sight with rope lighting, mirror balls, bubble tubes and treasure baskets.
Learning through play begins in the baby room where activities are planned to give babies and toddlers the opportunity to discover the world around them. Each day brings about new challenges and experiences, and whilst being given the opportunity to develop their natural inquisitiveness and curiosity, children can enhance their social skills & develop friendships by interacting with others.
Early Years and Pre School Nursery
We aim to give your child the best start in life by laying solid foundations for future learning, where children can explore the world around them, establish friendships, develop imagination, share, co-operate with others, gain confidence to initiate and try out new ideas, seek new challenges, make new discoveries; and most of all have great fun and develop a love of learning.
Our fully trained staff plan and implement a curriculum based on play. The Children are allowed access to all rooms to partake in the wide variety of activities on offer;
Role play, library, home corner, jigsaw puzzles, construction toys, creative workshop area, sticking, modelling, playdough, mark making/writing area, dance and music, sand and water play, painting
“Resources and activities are extremely well organised to allow independent access and develop children’s confidence significantly’ ” (OFSTED 2008)
Out Door Play
Nursery pioneer Margaret McMillan said, ‘The best classroom and the richest cupboard is roofed only by the sky’. We are firmly behind this vision at Nutkins Nursery.
Outdoor play provides children with real experiences that helps embed their early learning. We understand that young children learn through doing and for most children, outdoors is exciting, engaging and fun; therefore every opportunity is taken to provide these rich and varied experiences for children. We encourage them to have the freedom to play and express themselves physically, mentally and emotionally.
We have an enclosed play area with a special safety surface. It houses climbing equipment, and large outdoor toys. We are fortunate to have our own grassed area with a soil section for planting and growing. It has wooden balancing equipment and proves ideal for teddy bears picnics!
The children grow their own vegetables and herbs and we even have Ruffles, Ruby, Snowflake and Harriett the chickens who provide us with free range eggs for our cake baking!
The sensory garden provides children with a variety of sensory experiences through sight, touch and smell.

‘Rhythm of the Day’
Nutkins nursery provides contiuous provision for our children. Our fully qualified staff observe, assess and plan for each individual child. Through observations we put the child at the centre of our practice, finding out about their likes and dislikes, their responses to different situations or people and over time we can discover what new skills emerge.
“There is an extremely well thought out balance of adult-led and child directed activities and staff use their experience to challenge children’s thinking through effective questioning throughout the day” (OFSTED 2008).
The layout of the nursery provides the children with 10 learning areas
- Sand
- Water
- Mark-making
- Workshop
- Small world
- Book
- Construction

The children can move around the areas freely and staff are on hand in each area to enhance play.
The children can rest or sleep when they need to in the cosy areas or in our special sensory room. We also have an interactive white board for children to participate on.
The children participate in a variety of activities with many visiting professionals to enhance each child’s repertoire of skills! These activities include; football, French lessons, Early Years Yoga, music, sign language and dance lessons. All these activities are included in our fees we do not charge any additional costs.
“The uniqueness of each child is very well understood and the setting works hard to meet the needs of all children. A fully inclusive environment has been created in which children are supported in making excellent progress.” (OFSTED 2008)
"Let children be children. A skilled five year old grows from a busy four year old, a curious three year old, a cuddled two year old, an adventurous one year old and a communicative baby."
